Where did you go to School and how did you decide your major? What made you decide to go back to grad school?

I first attended Ferris State where I was pre-pharmacy. I soon realized pre-pharmacy was not what I thought it would be, but I really liked healthcare and my general business classes, so I switched to Healthcare Administration. I transferred to Central Michigan University that had one of the only programs for Healthcare Administration. They had a master’s program for Healthcare Administration and many of my classes were in the evening.

I decided to go to grad school since there weren’t many great job prospects due to the poor economy at the time. My mentor was the CEO of McLaren Flint in Michigan and recommended grad school, so the conditions were right to keep attending school.

Why healthcare consulting?

I had the experience of interning at Rush. I realized I didn’t want to be on the hospital administration side; I wanted a more dynamic career. I liked the travel aspect of consulting, and it seemed a lot more exciting than middle management at a hospital. Also, consulting offers a quicker path to management which was appealing to me.

What is one thing you’re good at/proud of, but doesn’t really matter to anyone else?

Endurance sports like running, hiking, anything that has to do with endurance. I don’t necessarily enjoy them, but I’m good at them since I get very competitive.

Cooking as well but that does matter to other people!

Where is your favorite place to go snowboarding? How old were you when you started?

I was in college when I started snowboarding, so I was around 21 years old. My favorite place I’ve ever been to snowboard is Vail and Whistler, considering all factors. Whistler, British Columbia has an enormous mountain and since the Olympics were there, the village is very built up with a lot of good restaurants / bars. The weather is also great, and the drive is pretty. The overall best conditions have to be Vail, Colorado though.

Employee Spotlight: DanWhat’s something that happened that can only happen here at Pathstone?

The real meaningful connections you make with people so quickly since we are such a small firm. At some of my other jobs, you couldn’t remember everyone’s names, but that is not the case at Pathstone.

What would you recommend to someone who is interested in consulting?

Take an objective review of your mental horsepower, ability to adapt quickly, and how well you can respond to feedback. If you are comfortable having an entire career where you will never be the expert and are always up for a challenge. The ultimate question you must ask yourself is if you want challenge or comfort.

Employee Spotlight: DanDuring your time in Chicago, what was the best neighborhood you lived in and what were some of your favorite Chicago memories?

My favorite neighborhood to live in was Lakeview. I lived there the most during my time in Chicago. Now, I would probably say Logan Square.

Some of my favorite memories include having a big friend group in the city to do bar crawls, going to Cubs games and Sunday kickball leagues.  And of course, all of the great restaurants.
