Where did you go to school and how did you decide your major?

I went to Hope College in West Michigan where I majored in computer science. I selected this field of study because I enjoyed the type of technical problem solving required and felt that a degree of such immediate relevance would serve as an excellent foundation upon which to build my career.

Why were you interested in healthcare consulting?

I started college on the pre-med track before transitioning to computer science. Although I learned that being a healthcare provider was not the role for me, I never lost interest in the healthcare space altogether. As an upperclassman, I joined a consulting organization and developed a passion for the communicative yet analytical nature of this work. When the opportunity arose to join the Pathstone team, it was not a hard decision to say yes.

What skills do you believe a successful consultant should have?

I believe a successful consultant brings a blend of skills to the table, beneath all of which lies the ability to communicate effectively. There is a myriad of mediums through which communication occurs and therefore near limitless ways to continually improve. I look forward to taking advantage of those growth opportunities as I progress in my career.

Employee Spotlight: JohnDo you have any previous experience in consulting? What are some earlier jobs or positions that you held?

I spent my last semesters at Hope College working as a student consultant on various projects with the Center for Leadership. The previous summer, I interned at UFPI in their administrative software department; the summer before that was spent researching the applications of machine learning and computer vision in sports.

What do you like the most about Chicago? What are some more things you look forward to doing?

There are so many things to do in Chicago! I’ve been here for almost 7 months but feel as though I have yet to scratch the surface. I love exploring new cuisine and trying foods from around the world. The restaurant scene in this city is great, and I am doing my best to take advantage of it.

What is something you are passionate about?

I began rock climbing about nine months ago and have been a passionate climber ever since. The feeling of topping out on a difficult problem is unlike any other and is worth every bit of pain it takes to achieve. While I have only climbed outdoors once, I hope it isn’t long until I’ve lost count.

What’s a fun fact about yourself that people might not know about you?

Fun for me but maybe not the audience, I enjoy stand-up comedy. And just as with outdoor rock climbing – I have only ever made someone laugh once!
